Shinobu Murata Verhagen has a diverse background with experience in education, hospitality, and various volunteer activities. With a strong foundation in Japanese literacy and education, including a major in Japanese Literature and a minor in Education from Aichi University, along with multiple certificates in Japanese language teaching, Shinobu has demonstrated expertise in teaching Japanese language and culture.

I have a Japanese teaching licence in Japan and I am trained for teaching Elementary school up to:
* Preparation for students who are going to Japan as exchange students.
* The public school system curriculum Japanese grade 5 to 12.
* College/University course Japanese 101, 102, 103, 104 and advanced.
* Support for homeschool, and independent study or corresponded.

Teaching style

My lessons will be arranged and based on what students objectives are. I will work with students on their goals and their achievements.

I am good with beginners and will introduce to them easy and fun ways to study Japanese and they will never feel overwhelmed. Japanese writing is a challenge. I will use the alphabet (Romaji) and teach Japanese pronunciation first before we learn how to write in Japanese.

I am familiar with printed textbooks, such as Japanese for Young People,
Japanese for Busy People, Genki, Learn Japanese College Text etc. If the student has studied Japanese with textbooks, I will follow up and review with them.

For advanced students or business persons, I will advise on specific ways to step up to the next level and focus on their individual needs.

I believe that language is attached to culture, so I will also introduce Japanese culture during my lessons.

Hobbies

She has studied Japanese Calligraphy from age of 5 years old and plays trumpet with the Salt Spring Concert Band and Swing Shift Big Band.
