Introduction
Hi, my name is Nick Tate and I am an English Language teacher. I am a native English speaker, and I am currently living outside Cambridge in the UK.
I’ve been teaching English for over 10 years. For some of that time, I have taught at language schools in South-East Asia, and I have experience as an English language instructor in the UK, where I have worked at colleges and universities.
The main areas of teaching English as a foreign language that I have specialized in are General English, Business English, English for Academic Purposes, Critical Thinking and IELTS exam Preparation. Over the last several years, I have taught on numerous pre-sessional courses for students preparing to take a BA or MA degree in UK or Australian based universities.
Over my teaching career, I have instructed students of various ages, nationalities and backgrounds and I have a lot of experience teaching learners on a one-to-one basis.
In terms of credentials, I have gained a BA in Music, an MA in Education, and the English Language teaching qualifications of CELTA and DELTA.
My main hobby is listening to different genres of music, and I also play piano and acoustic guitar regularly. In addition to that, I enjoy playing sport, including football and tennis.
In lessons, I enjoy incorporating authentic videos and articles where useful, and I have developed a wide range of self-created lessons across the four language skills and the four language systems for use in different contexts. I am also familiar with various English Language textbooks and course-books and I frequently adapt and supplement these materials to provide more in-depth and tailored instruction.
I am able to identify a student’s abilities and weaknesses and provide lessons to address these shortcomings while further developing areas of strength. I can also adapt to fit the preferences of an individual learner.
In an initial lesson, we can discuss the areas and skills of the English Language that you may want to focus on, the type of content, style, level, and materials that you feel would be most suitable and the way in which you would like lessons to be structured. I have a range of lesson types available, and I can answer any questions you may have about these different courses, while explaining the content, purpose, benefits, expected learning outcomes, and other relevant details. If you have specific goals or interests that you would like lessons to be based around, I am always open to listen to any requests, and I will do my best to meet your requirements, so that classes can be as productive as possible for you.
Lessons will feature:
- Engaging activities and tasks relevant to the chosen subject area
- Regular practice in the four language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing (if suitable for the lesson type)
- Detailed written feedback provided at the end of each session
- Error correction relating to grammar, vocabulary & pronunciation (in verbal and written forms)
- A wide range of exercises and worksheets available to be completed during or outside of class
- Testing and assessment materials suitable for a given subject area (on request)
- Test practice and feedback for exam preparation classes
- Frequent reviews and recaps of materials and content previously covered
