What is the JLPT exam?

The goal of the JLPT exams is to test to communicative competence in the Japanese langauge of each test taker. The levels in the exam range from N5-N1, where N1 is the highest level.

The JLPT places importance not only on knowledge of Japanese-language vocabulary and grammar but also on the ability to use the knowledge in actual communication. In order to perform various "everyday tasks" that require language, not only language knowledge but also the ability to actually use it are necessary. Therefore, the JLPT measures comprehensive Japanese-language communicative competence through three elements: "Language Knowledge" to measure, and "Reading" and "Listening" to measure.

Due to the large scale of testing, answers will be machine-scored. Note that the JLPT does not include sections to measure speaking or writing proficiency directly.


What sections are in the N5 level?

The JLPT N5 level tests whether or not a person has some basic understanding of the Japanese language. It test the persons ability read basic sentences in hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji as well as their ability to understand basic conversations about regular daily interactions.

What sections are in the N4 level?

The JLPT N4 exam tests whether or not a person has basic understanding of the Japanese language. To pass the test you need to be able to read and understand a passage containing familiar daily topics as well as the ability to understand some simply Japanese conversations when the speaker speaks slowly.

What sections are in the N3 level?

The JLPT N3 exam tests whether or not a person can communicate in the Japanese language in basic everyday situations. To pass this level the test taker needs to be able to skim a document such as a newspaper and understand the general idea of what the articles are covering. They must also be able to understand when spoken to in Japanese at a regular speed about everyday topics.

What sections are in the N2 level?

The JLPT N2 exam tests whether or not a person can communicate in the Japanese language in basic everyday situations as well as some specific unusual situations. They must be able to read articles on a variety of topics and understand not only the literal meaning but also some simple implied means in the content. They must be able to follow conversations between groups of people and understand what is being discussed and the relationships between the speakers.

When can I take the JLPT exam?

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) or ÈÕ±¾ÕZÄÜÁ¦Ô‡òY Nihongo N¨­ryoku Shiken in Japanese is the a standardized test that evaluates the levels of Japanese language proficiency for non-native Japanese speakers. This test has 5 levels and is held twice a year.
